Brief Introduction of ASCLab |
¡¡ |
 |
¡¡ |
Applied Superconductivity Laboratory¡¯s roots go back to 1988 when it was established as the Research Laboratory of Cryogenics and Superconductivity. It was renamed as Applied Superconductivity Laboratory (ASCLab) of Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) in 1997. |
The principal investigators of ASCLab have started conducting reseach in the fields of cryogenics and superconductivity at an institution of Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense since 1970. They are the pioneers in studying the applications of superconductivity in China. The lab has four full professors and three of them enjoy the Special Allowance of Chinese Government. ASCLab focuses on application of superconductivity to transportation systems and energy sources. The research work covers electromagnetic properties of superconductors, superconducting electrotechnics, superconductive electronics, system engineering on superconductivity application (for example, the HTS maglev vehicle etc.)
ASCLab has developed some special apparatuses for its research: Microwave Superconducting Test System, HTS Maglev Measurement System
(SCML-01), HTS Maglev Measurement System
(SCML-02), HTS Maglev Dynamic Test System (SCML-03) and HTS Maglev Vehicle Test System "Century", and so on. |

ASCLab has presided and accomplished more than ten national projects with grants from CSTIND (the Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defense), NSFC (the Nature & Science Fund Commission), ¡°National 863 Project¡± (the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China) etc. |
In 1970¡¯s, ASCLab designed a microwave quantum amplifiers using low-temperature superconducting (LTS) magnets (4.2 K) which passed the technical evaluation in 1980. From 1978 to 1988, ASCLab developed a first LTS Nb microwave cavity system demonstrator in China. In 1987 ASCLab started to study electromagnetic properties of High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) bulk and its application. From 1989 to 1998, ASCLab finished projects with grant from ¡°National 863 Project¡± and NSF.

During the period of the national 9th five-year-plan, ASCLab directed the ¡°National 863 Project¡± and ¡°National 211 Project¡± (Reform Plan of Teaching Contents and Curriculum of Higher Education of the 21st Century). After the systematic study about the electromagnetic properties of HTS superconductor bulk, the first man-loading HTS maglev test vehicle in the world¡ª ¡°Century¡± was born in ASCLab on Dec. 31st, 2000. The comments from National Committee of Experts in Superconductivity of ¡°863 project¡± were ¡°By hard work of the group, China made an important breakthrough of basic research of HTS maglev application and other related technology. Now we can play a leading role in this field in the world. This original work also laid the foundation to apply the HTS maglev technology in transportation and other fields and provided guidance for long-term development in the subject¡±. ¡°Century¡± was awarded Top 10 Advancements of Science and Technology of Chinese Colleges in 2001, and the comment was ¡°it possesses tremendous developing opportunity and commercial potential¡±. |
ACSLab holds two patents from its award winning work. The researchers have published ¡°Glossary of Superconducting Electronics¡± (Standard of Ministry of Electronic Industry SJ/T 10140-91), ¡°Application of Superconductivity¡± (in Chinese) and translated ¡°High Temperature Superconducting Microwave Circuit¡±. They also collaborated with foreign researchers on two books in English and edited the proceeding of International HTS Maglev Workshop, 2002 (Chengdu, China).
ASCLab had won the National Certificate of Merit for the May Day by All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Professor Wang Jiasu, the director of ASCLab, had won the National Excellent Researcher award, the National Exemplar Teacher award, Mao Yisheng prize and Zhan Tianyou prize of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). ASCLab is working on projects with grants from ¡°National 863 project¡±, NSFC, ¡°National 211 projects¡±, and Specialized Research Fund for the Doctoral Program of Higher Education etc in China.
